Games of Skill for Party Entertainment

Board games are usually games of strategy which require the players to move pieces around a board such as in chess, checkers, monopoly, etc.

Games of skill which are not board games usually require the players to use some thinking process including imagination.

Charades

One of my favorite party games of skill is Charades. This game requires some acting ability, a lot of imagination, and much interaction with the party attendees.

How to Play Charades

Usually the party host or hostess picks a player and gives him or her a phrase, word or name on a slip of paper. The player is then required to act out - silently - sections of the word or phrase so that the other people present can try to guess the word or phrase or name which was picked. The actor is not allowed to speak at all so it is all "silent film". In the beginning the actor holds up a number of fingers indicating how many words or syllables he intends to portray and from there on it is all "show". The results are generally hilarious with many mistakes, laughs and good cheer for all.

It is really a fun game of skill that livens up a party tremendously.

Other Skill Party Games

Of course there are many other games of skill that can enhance a party. One similar to "Charades" is "Detective" where two or three of the party members will act out a theft or murder and the rest of the party have to determine the culprit through observation and clues. This game also usually produces many laughs.

Then there are games such as Treasure Hunt or "Hot/Cold" where an item is hidden and the host or hostess cries out "hot" if a player is close to the object, or "cold" if he is far from it. This game is more suitable for children or a young crowd rather than mid-lifers or older party goers.

Purpose of Party Games

Whatever game of skill is chosen for party entertainment, the purpose is really to entertain. Any game that causes hurt feelings or humiliation of any kind is not entertainment. The purpose is to make the party members laugh and enjoy themselves and games of skill should be chosen with that in mind.
